The ancient City gateway of Temple Bar was rebuilt
by Sir Christopher Wren between 1669 and 1672, and stood across
Fleet Street until 1878 when it was removed in order to widen the
road. As the archway was demolished, the stones were numbered and
stored, and eventually re-erected as the gateway to Theobalds Park
in Hertfordshire. Here it fell into disrepair, until it was purchased
by the Temple Bar Trust and returned to the city. It now stands
as an entrance to Paternoster Square. Johnston and Mather are proud
to have been the Planning Supervisors for the City of London for
this unique project.
In 2005 the Temple Bar project was awarded a Special Commendation
by the Worshipful Company of Architects. |
